Jakarta (Indonesia), April 29 (NationPress) The National Basketball Association (NBA) has shown a keen interest in transferring its basketball academy to Indonesia from Australia, as reported by local media citing Indonesia's Youth and Sports Minister, Dito Ariotedjo.
"The NBA desires to shift its academy, currently situated in Australia, to Indonesia due to the country's significant basketball following," Ariotedjo mentioned during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Indonesian Sports Promotion and the Indonesian Basketball Association in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He further stated that the NBA disclosed this initiative in a recent meeting with him in New York, where the league reiterated its strong commitment to enhance its presence in Indonesia, which includes establishing a basketball academy, as reported by Xinhua.
Based on data from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Ariotedjo noted that Indonesia ranks among the top five nations worldwide in basketball participation. This data is consistent with records from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, indicating that basketball is one of the most favored sports in the nation.
"Hence, we, as the government, will not only endorse this initiative but also actively facilitate its realization," he stated.
The minister urged the Indonesian Basketball Association and Indonesian Sports Promotion to fervently support the NBA's ambitions. "This opportunity should be embraced for the growth of basketball in Indonesia," he added.
The NBA Global Academy is recognized as one of the premier basketball training centers located at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, Australia.
The NBA Global Academy operates in collaboration with BA and acts as the NBA’s central hub for elite male and female prospects from outside the U.S. Each year, up to sixteen top athletes are trained at the NBA Global Academy under the guidance of NBA-appointed coaches in conjunction with BA’s Centre of Excellence team.
This academy forms part of the NBA's global outreach program, featuring training centers across all major continents to foster and develop basketball talent worldwide.
