New Delhi, May 9 (NationPress) Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medalist, has made the announcement regarding the postponement of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 javelin throw competition, originally scheduled for May 24 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. This decision comes in response to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
The Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 was poised to be India’s inaugural International Javelin throw event, sanctioned by World Athletics. Neeraj Chopra, in partnership with JSW Sports and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), had organized this historic competition. The event was expected to attract numerous Olympic medalists, including Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Thomas Rohler, Anderson Peters, and others.
“Given the present circumstances, the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic is postponed until further notice. This choice was made after thorough consideration and discussions, ensuring the safety of athletes, stakeholders, and the wider community is our utmost priority.
“We cherish the unifying essence of sports. However, during this crucial time, our solidarity with the nation takes precedence. Our deepest respect and thoughts are with our Armed Forces, who are bravely serving our country. An updated schedule for the NC Classic will be shared in due course. Jai Hind,” Chopra expressed on Instagram.
Recently, Pakistan initiated aerial assaults on Jammu and various military installations near the western border, but India's air defense systems successfully countered these threats.
The attempted strikes by Pakistan, which involved drones and missiles, caused blackouts and triggered sirens in several areas including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors and remain alert as emergency measures were implemented.
These assaults appear to be retaliatory actions for Operation Sindoor by Indian forces, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, linked to an attack on tourists in Pahalgam where 26 tourists were tragically killed—25 Indians and one Nepali citizen.
In light of these developments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced an immediate suspension of IPL 2025 for one week.
