Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) As double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra takes on the roles of both an organiser and an athlete, he acknowledged that managing this dual responsibility is quite challenging. He is currently balancing the organisation of an international javelin event while simultaneously preparing for competition.
The Neeraj Chopra Classic, which is sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and co-organised by the two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra along with JSW Sports, has drawn top talent from across the world. This event marks India's inaugural international javelin competition set to occur at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday.
During a press conference, Chopra shared insights into the difficulties he faces in managing both roles, stating, “The hardest part is not only conceptualising such an event but also competing in it,” he remarked. “While organising is one task, participating at the same time is truly demanding. Until now, my sole focus was on competing, but now I must oversee everything.”
From managing the event's logistics to refining his own athletic preparation, Chopra is engaged in nearly every detail of the planning process. “Even concerning the meals, I must ensure they aren’t overly spicy for the athletes,” he said with a grin, explaining this to fellow competitors Thomas Rohler and Julius Yego, who were also present at the press conference.
Rio Olympics champion Rohler commented on Chopra’s dual role as both organiser and athlete, stating, “So far, he (Neeraj Chopra) is doing exceptionally well. It’s both a pleasure and a joy to visit a country that is on the rise in javelin. This is a special moment for us all.”
Rohler recounted when he received a call from Chopra regarding the invitation to the competition, saying, “We connected about the meet quite early, and I thought, ‘Yes, I am seizing this opportunity.’”
Kenyan athlete Yego, who secured silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, remarked, “You may view this as a minor event, but it holds significant importance. When my manager informed me about this event, I immediately said, ‘Yes, I want to go to India, as Chopra is my good friend.’”
