Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) Neeraj Chopra, the gold medallist from the Tokyo Olympics, has reiterated his ambitious vision to revolutionize the athletics scene in India, commencing with the launch of the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic). In a pre-event discussion regarding the javelin competition taking place on Friday, Chopra articulated his aspiration to establish a venue where both international and Indian athletes can compete side by side in India.
As both the organizer and a participant of the NC Classic, Chopra elaborated on the primary goal of hosting this World Athletics 'A category' event in India: "We have achieved medals, but now the focus is on enhancing javelin and athletics in general. I have always envisioned a grand event in India where international athletes can compete alongside our talented Indian athletes. This dream is now becoming a reality."
Chopra expressed immense gratitude towards the support from World Athletics, AFI, and various brands, along with significant backing from the Karnataka government. He stated, "I am thrilled that foreign athletes are participating, and I look forward to competing with them here in India," as reported by IANS.
When questioned about India's aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics, world champion Neeraj Chopra underscored the necessity of organizing prestigious international events like the Diamond League, a prominent annual track and field series.
"I want to emphasize the importance of the TOPS. I have been benefiting from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme for several years, receiving substantial support. Competing abroad and training effectively has been possible due to this assistance. I believe we should strive to bring events like the Diamond League here as they hold significant prestige and occur annually. Initiating such events will be a tremendous step forward, paving the way for even larger endeavors in the future," he added.
Chopra, who made headlines by joining the elite 90m club with a throw of 90.23 meters at the Doha Diamond League in May, expressed his unwavering focus and confidence in dealing with pressure.
"There’s absolutely no pressure. I have consistently given my best effort, and that focus continues. I’m excited to have finally crossed the 90-meter mark," he concluded.
