Ostrava (Czech Republic), June 24 (NationPress) - The two-time Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured the javelin throw title at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 meet, achieving a remarkable throw of 85.29 metres in this one-day event held on Tuesday.
Neeraj clinched the victory with one throw remaining, as his best effort of 85.29m proved unbeatable after six rounds, marking another prestigious podium finish this season. This victory marks his second title in just a month, following his success at the Paris Diamond League meet shortly before.
The 27-year-old athlete from Haryana delivered his best throw on his third attempt, finishing ahead of Douw Smit from South Africa, who recorded 84.12m, and Anderson Peters from Grenada, who achieved 83.63m.
Neeraj, who made history for India by winning the gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and secured silver in Paris in 2024, recently topped the Paris Diamond League and aimed to maintain his winning momentum in Ostrava.
While he succeeded, the distance he reached on Tuesday was somewhat disappointing for him. Neeraj had previously crossed the 90m mark and aspires to achieve that milestone again.
However, his performance on Tuesday began with a foul on his first attempt. He managed a distance of 83.45m in his second attempt but then made a strong comeback with the 85.29m throw on his third attempt, placing him in the lead, followed by Douw at 84.12m and Peters at 83.63m.
Despite his best efforts, Neeraj could not improve his distance in his subsequent throws. He recorded 82.17m on his fourth attempt, followed by 81.01m on his fifth, and intentionally fouled on his sixth throw as he couldn't execute it properly to gain a good distance.
