Did the Netherlands' Bowlers Shine Against Namibia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) Netherlands captain Scott Edwards commended his team's exceptional bowling performance after they triumphed over Namibia by seven wickets in their Group A match of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
Fast-bowling all-rounder Bas de Leede was the star of the match, remaining unbeaten on 72 while also taking two wickets, becoming the first player from the Netherlands to achieve both a fifty and two wickets in a T20 World Cup game.
His solid innings led the Netherlands to chase down a target of 157 with two overs to spare, after limiting Namibia to a total of 156/8. This victory marked the Netherlands' largest win by wickets in T20 World Cup history and revitalized their campaign following a narrow defeat against Pakistan.
"It was a pretty good day. I believe we had slightly better conditions. Our bowlers performed exceptionally well during the powerplay and taking wickets late helped us restrict them to what we felt was a below-par score," he remarked during the post-match presentation.
Namibia's batting lineup included several left-handed batsmen, and Edwards was pleased with how his off-spinners, particularly young Aryan Dutt, managed the situation. "We trust our right-arm off-spinners to bowl to both left and right-handers, and it was advantageous to face a few left-handers in the middle overs, allowing us to continue applying spin pressure. In the end, they dealt with it quite well, but our bowlers were commendable overall," he added.
Edwards was also full of praise for de Leede’s all-round performance. "He’s a complete player, isn’t he? He was phenomenal with the ball, taking control of the match after bowling his first over in the 10th over, and he was equally effective with the bat," he stated.
He highlighted the contribution of opener Michael Levitt, who scored 28 off 15 balls, providing early momentum for the chase. "He’s been crucial for us over the past few years, an aggressive player with immense power that disrupts bowlers’ lengths. It was great for him to get going, and I believe he has a big innings on the horizon," Edwards remarked.
Looking forward, Edwards emphasized the significance of their upcoming match against the USA in Chennai. "It's massive. We need to win that game to keep our hopes alive. We’ll travel tomorrow and prepare thoroughly for that match, aiming to deliver a strong performance."
