Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) Fast bowler Matt Henry makes his comeback to New Zealand’s squad as Mitchell Santner, the captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first against South Africa in the opening semi-final of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

The team emerging victorious in this match will secure a spot in the final scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Historically, South Africa has triumphed in all five encounters against New Zealand in this tournament's history.

However, this is the first time these teams will meet in the knockout rounds. In ICC 50-over tournaments, New Zealand has a favorable record, having won a quarter-final and two semi-finals against South Africa.

In addition to Henry, who rejoined the team after the birth of his second child, Santner confirmed that Jimmy Neesham is taking the place of Ish Sodhi. “The pitch looked promising the other night. We recognize their strength, and we must perform well, apply pressure, and see where it leads us,” he stated.

South Africa's captain Aiden Markram mentioned that Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Keshav Maharaj are back in the lineup after resting during their last Super Eights match against Zimbabwe, which they won by five wickets in New Delhi.

“Everyone stepped up at some point, which is very gratifying. We hope to start strong with the bat and set a competitive total. We practiced here last night, and scoring runs in a knockout match is crucial,” he remarked.

According to the pitch report by Pommie Mbangwa and Aaron Finch, the square boundaries measure 62 and 66 meters, while the straight boundary is 74 meters. They noted a few cracks along the off-stump line for right-handed batsmen, which might cause early movement and lead to unpredictable bounce with the new ball.

They also suggested that once the shine diminishes, the pitch, which was previously used for the India-West Indies Super Eights match, is expected to play consistently. Finch added that the groundskeeper indicated minimal dew in the earlier match, but more is likely to develop on the field for Wednesday’s knockout showdown.
