Did New Zealand Choose to Bowl First Against India in the 1st T20I?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Jan 21 (NationPress) New Zealand has secured the toss and opted to bowl first against India in the inaugural match of a five-match T20I series taking place at the VCA Stadium today, marking the debut of pacer Kristian Clarke. Ishan Kishan, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, makes his return to the India T20I squad for the first time since 2023. With Shubman Gill left out, Sanju Samson reclaims the opener position alongside the in-form Abhishek Sharma.
This series acts as a precursor to the T20 World Cup commencing on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka, with the Suryakumar Yadav-led team entering as the reigning champions. “We aimed to bowl first, anticipating dew around 8:30 PM during our practice.
“However, we are confident in setting a target as we have been successful batting first. Players such as Shreyas, Harshit, Bishnoi, and Kuldeep are missing out,” stated Suryakumar, who is participating in his 100th T20I match.
Earlier this month, New Zealand triumphed over India in an ODI series on Indian soil for the first time. “The pitch appears favorable and likely to be high-scoring. Last week was quite memorable. Every team is aware of the challenges of winning in India. Nonetheless, this is a new series against a formidable team at home. It’s a great start for our World Cup preparation,” commented captain Mitchell Santner.
In their pitch analysis, Simon Doull and Deep Dasgupta noted that the Nagpur conditions would benefit bowlers, describing the surface as low-scoring and slow. “This venue has hosted the highest number of T20I matches in India. The pitch is relatively low-scoring. They’ve reconditioned the surface effectively, but there are numerous cracks. The base is soft.
“Expect a low, slow pitch. During NZ's last visit, the pitch turned significantly, but that isn’t the case tonight. The cracks are broad, allowing the ball to move and find edges. Dew is minimal. Winning the toss still favors a chase,” explained Doull and Dasgupta.
