London, Sep 1 (NationPress) England’s seam-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton has declared an indefinite hiatus from red-ball cricket with immediate effect to concentrate on the shorter formats of the game.
Overton, who has played for Surrey and Somerset across 99 first-class matches and has represented England in two Tests since his debut in 2022, stated that this decision followed extensive contemplation. Consequently, he will not participate in England’s squad for the crucial Ashes, beginning on November 21 in Perth.
"After considerable reflection, I have chosen to take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket. I feel privileged to have played 99 first-class matches, including two Test matches for England. Red-ball cricket has laid the groundwork for my professional journey and has opened the door to every opportunity I’ve had in the sport thus far. It’s where I learned the game, and it ignited the goals and aspirations that have driven me for so long.
"However, at this point in my career, with the rigorous demands of cricket throughout a 12-month calendar, it’s no longer feasible for me to fully commit to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally. Moving forward, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will strive to perform at the highest level for as long as I can," Overton mentioned in a statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday.
Overton was part of Surrey’s triumphant run in the County Championship, which included taking 36 wickets in their 2022 victory with his best figures being 6-61. While the England Test team competes in the Ashes in Australia, Overton will be playing for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Rob Key, the England Men’s Director of Cricket, conveyed that the decision was unexpected but respected by the management. "Jamie’s news was surprising and it’s unfortunate to see, as he would have been integral to our red-ball plans moving forward. However, it highlights the current realities of the cricketing landscape. We respect his choice and appreciate him for notifying us promptly," he stated.
