Charlotte, June 22 (NationPress) Pachuca striker Salomon Rondon expressed confidence that his team will be in a stronger position to take on Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup compared to their previous encounter in the last year's Intercontinental Cup final.
In that match, Madrid emerged victorious with a score of 3-0 against a fatigued Pachuca side.
"We have experienced what it's like to compete against Real Madrid, but this time around, we won't face the same exhaustion as we did in the Intercontinental Cup final, where we clearly struggled after two incredibly challenging matches," Rondon shared with Xinhua ahead of the upcoming game in Charlotte.
"There will be a significant difference in our fitness, and I anticipate it will be an exciting match to witness."
The Mexican team must secure a win to maintain their chances of progressing to the knockout stage after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Salzburg in their Group H opener.
In contrast, Madrid had a 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal in their first match.
Rondon, pivotal in Pachuca's triumph at the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, mentioned he is relishing his role as a mentor to younger players.
"I take great joy in assisting my teammates. Our squad is youthful but incredibly motivated to develop," the 35-year-old stated, emphasizing that he is taking the tournament "very seriously."
"Competing in this tournament holds immense significance for me. We represent Mexico and CONCACAF, as well as my home country, Venezuela. Observing the caliber of the other teams makes me realize the importance of this event, which is why we approach it with utmost respect," he added.
On the other hand, Real Madrid's center-back Dean Huijsen, who joined the club earlier this month, remarked, "It's a dream come true for me. Every child dreams of playing for Real Madrid. It's the greatest club in the world, and I am incredibly happy and proud to be here."
"We have a fantastic group, with a real sense of camaraderie in the locker room. We're excited to have Xabi Alonso on board. He possesses countless great ideas, and I believe we will enjoy some remarkable years together. We are Real Madrid. Winning is our obligation, and I am confident we will achieve just that," he concluded.
