Pakistan Penalized for Delayed Over-Rate in Second Test Against South Africa

Dubai, Jan 7 (NationPress) Pakistan has been fined 25 percent of their match fee and has also had five ICC World Test Championship points deducted for not meeting the required over-rate against South Africa during the second Test held in Cape Town.
Richie Richardson from the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees enforced the penalty after it was determined that Pakistan was five overs short of the target, even after considering time allowances, as stated by the ICC in a release on Tuesday.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate violations, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the designated time.
Moreover, per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, teams lose one point for every over they fall short. As a result, five World Test Championship points have been subtracted from Pakistan's points tally.
Pakistan's captain Shan Masood admitted guilt for the infringement and accepted the recommended penalty, eliminating the need for an official hearing.
The on-field officials, including umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon, along with third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire Stephen Harris, filed the charge.
In the match, Pakistan was defeated by 10 wickets after South Africa enforced the follow-on and restricted them to 478 runs in their second innings. The South African team successfully chased down a target of 58 runs without losing a wicket on Monday.
South Africa concluded the two-match series with a 2-0 victory, having earlier beaten Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test, thus securing a spot in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Led by Temba Bavuma, South Africa is set to face Australia in the WTC final at Lord's starting June 11. Australia, captained by Pat Cummins, are the defending champions, having triumphed over India by 209 runs in the 2023 final at The Oval.
