IPL 2025: Jaffer Calls for Improved 'Strike Rotation and Shot Selection' from Pant

Synopsis

In a recent analysis, Wasim Jaffer highlighted Rishabh Pant's need for improved strike rotation and shot selection after his performance against Chennai Super Kings. Despite a strong start, Pant's innings slowed down, prompting Jaffer to suggest focusing on straight boundaries and being more adaptable to field placements.

Key Takeaways

  • Wasim Jaffer urges Rishabh Pant to enhance his strike rotation.
  • Pant scored 63 runs from 49 balls against CSK.
  • Improvement in shot selection is essential for better performance.
  • Field placement adaptability is key to maximizing scoring opportunities.
  • Abhinav Mukund supports Jaffer’s views on Pant’s flexibility.

New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Former India opener Wasim Jaffer asserts that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant needs to enhance his ability to rotate the strike and refine his shot selection. This comes after the wicketkeeper-batter scored a commendable 63 runs off 49 balls against Chennai Super Kings in Lucknow.

Pant, who had been facing difficulties with his scoring in earlier matches, began with a rapid 27 runs in 16 balls but significantly slowed down, reaching 38 runs off 38 balls before being dismissed by CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

“I’m unsure if he aims to rotate the strike. Kohli excels at that, smoothly getting off strike while being versatile. However, Pant occasionally gets stuck, leading him to attempt big shots. He should definitely improve on striking rotation,” Jaffer expressed during an ESPNcricinfo TimeOut session.

He further emphasized that Pant should concentrate on targeting straight boundaries, irrespective of whether he faces spinners or fast bowlers. “He rarely aims straight. He tends to favor the leg side, targeting square leg or cow corner. He did hit a straight six towards the end (against CSK), yet initially, he seemed fixated on the leg side or executing that reverse scoop, which was quite limited.”

“Often, teams position fielders in that area, so I believe he needs to utilize the ground down the line more effectively.”

Former India Test batter Abhinav Mukund shared similar views, noting Pant’s rigidity against specific field arrangements. “The cover area seemed off-limits for him today, which is concerning. Pant has immense potential when he’s agile. I prefer him being proactive, targeting over cover and straight. However, he seemed unable to find that rhythm today.”
