London, July 11 (NationPress) India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant is currently under medical supervision following an injury to his left index finger sustained during Day 1 of the third Test of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy at Lord’s.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday that Pant is "still recovering" and will not participate at the beginning of Day 2. In his absence, reserve wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel will take over the wicketkeeping duties.
"Rishabh Pant is still recovering from the impact on his left index finger. The BCCI medical team is closely observing his recovery. Dhruv Jurel will continue to keep wickets on Day 2," the BCCI shared on X.
The injury transpired during the 34th over of England’s innings on Thursday when Pant tried to intercept a leg-side delivery from Jasprit Bumrah aimed at Ollie Pope. The ball made contact with the tips of Pant’s left index finger as he stretched to dive, causing evident pain. He received immediate care from team physio Kamlesh Jain and had his fingers heavily bandaged but left the field shortly after concluding the over.
Jurel, who previously donned the gloves for India in the home series against England and during India A’s matches, promptly stepped in as a substitute and will maintain his position as Pant recovers.
Pant’s absence raises concerns for the Indian team, not only because of his crucial role behind the stumps but also due to his outstanding batting performance this series—scoring 342 runs in two Tests at an average of 85.50, including two centuries in the opening match at Headingley.
Images from the Indian dressing room revealed head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak checking on Pant’s condition as he returned from the field with Jain.
India is hopeful for a speedy recovery for their star keeper-batter, whose enthusiasm and strategic insights have been vital to their Test achievements.
