Bangkok, May 25 (NationPress) Showcasing his exceptional skills, Indian boxer Pawan Bartwal advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s 55kg division at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament after a decisive 5-0 victory against Cambodia’s Sao Rangsey on Sunday.
India has sent a formidable 19-member team to this prestigious event, sanctioned by the World Boxing Council-affiliated Asian organization, attracting top-tier boxers from nations such as China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea, and the host nation Thailand.
Originating from Syupuri village in Uttarakhand, Pawan demonstrated remarkable tactical acumen and ring sovereignty from the start. He began the match with caution, evading early strikes and patiently waiting for the right moment, eventually landing a precise punch that set the pace for the fight.
The 26-year-old consistently cornered his opponent, and a brilliant bob-and-weave maneuver in the second round allowed him to deliver another clean blow. With solid defense and strategic aggression, he kept Rangsey at bay, securing a unanimous decision—marking his second consecutive win in the tournament.
Having served in the Indian Army since 2017 and being a National Championship silver medalist, Bartwal has been in the boxing scene since 2010. He approaches the quarterfinals with considerable momentum and aspirations for a podium finish.
On Saturday, Bartwal effectively combined his aggressive style with solid defense, outclassing his local opponent in the opening round of the men’s 55 kg weight class.
In the women’s 60kg weight category, National Games bronze medalist Sanju MS displayed her aggressive boxing style, overwhelming her Japanese rival to reach the quarterfinals. Sanju defeated Japan’s Sarii Kokufu 5-0, while Bartwal overcame Thailand’s Thanarat Saengphet with a score of 4-1.
Transitioning from kickboxing to traditional boxing, Sanju is recognized for her offensive tactics and came out strong from the first round against Kokufu.
In other matches of the day, athletes Nikhil (60kg), Amit Kumar (65kg), and Hemant Yadav (70kg) were eliminated in the opening round.
