Lucknow, April 1 (NationPress) Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings showcased an impressive performance, overpowering Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by eight wickets at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Leading his team, the Punjab skipper highlighted the significance of mindset over team combinations after his squad outperformed LSG in every aspect of the game.
The Punjab Kings certainly exhibited the winning mentality their captain emphasized. From the very first over, they took command of the match, ensuring LSG could not establish their rhythm. Choosing to bowl first, PBKS made an early breakthrough with Arshdeep Singh, who dismissed the formidable Mitchell Marsh for a golden duck. This initial success allowed Punjab’s bowlers to maintain relentless pressure, stifling the home side at every opportunity.
“This is the start we needed. The boys executed their roles effectively, contributing to the best of their abilities, and everything we planned was carried out flawlessly. Honestly, there is no perfect combination. The camaraderie and synergy must align at the right moment,” Iyer stated following Punjab’s commanding win.
Aware of Rishabh Pant’s historical challenges against Glenn Maxwell, Iyer brought in the Australian off-spinner early during the power-play, a tactical decision that paid off. Maxwell forced Pant into a poor shot, dismissing the LSG captain cheaply and further disrupting the home team’s innings.
LSG’s recovery effort was led by Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni, who formed a 54-run partnership to inject life into the innings. Pooran’s explosive 44 off 30 balls appeared to shift momentum, but Yuzvendra Chahal provided another pivotal moment, inducing a mistimed lofted shot that found Maxwell at long-off.
Badoni carried the innings forward, partnering aggressively with Abdul Samad, whose rapid 27 off 12 balls helped lift LSG to a respectable total of 171/7. However, this total was far from sufficient against a confident Punjab side.
Prabhsimran Singh ensured a smooth chase, scoring 69 off just 34 balls. His explosive batting left LSG bowlers scrambling as Punjab quickly reached 84/2.
Iyer, calm and composed, anchored the innings with a smooth unbeaten 52 off 30 balls, while Nehal Wadhera perfectly executed the finisher’s role. Wadhera’s blazing 43 off 25 balls guaranteed Punjab’s victory with 22 balls remaining, marking their second consecutive win in the tournament.
“Every team has the potential to win; it’s about sharing the same mindset of wanting to win - that’s something we always emphasize. I strive to stay in the present, and this innings is now history for me. My focus is on the next match,” he concluded.
