PM Modi Commends Humpy's Tenacity and Genius as a Source of Inspiration for Millions

New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Koneru Humpy for her tenacity and genius following her triumph at the World Rapid Chess Championship on Sunday.
Humpy, who is recognized as India's leading female chess player, achieved her second World Rapid Chess Championship title with a score of 8.5/11. She previously won her inaugural gold in the 2019 edition held in Moscow.
“Kudos to @humpy_koneru for her victory at the 2024 FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship! Her tenacity and genius serve as an inspiration to millions. This win is particularly noteworthy as it marks her second world rapid championship title, making her the only Indian to accomplish this remarkable achievement,” PM Modi stated on X.
Competing with the black pieces, she skillfully outmaneuvered Indonesia’s International Master Irine Kharisma Sukandar in a tough endgame, claiming the title with flair.
Humpy’s success further embellishes the remarkable achievements of Indian chess in 2024, following the country’s gold medal victories in the Chess Olympiad this summer in both the Open and Women’s categories, as well as Gukesh D becoming the youngest World Champion in classical chess.
"Achieving the status of world champion at the age of 37 is no small feat. It becomes increasingly challenging to maintain motivation and sharpness as one ages. I am thrilled to have reached this milestone," Humpy expressed after her significant accomplishment.
"Winning for the second time brings me immense joy. Honestly, I hadn’t anticipated this since I lost my first-round match, and I never envisioned that I could conclude the tournament as the world champion. This victory holds great significance for me. Whenever I find myself in a challenging position, I feel this accomplishment has empowered me to fight back and continue my chess journey," she added.
