New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a steadfast supporter of Indian sports, took a moment to commend the junior women's hockey team of India after their impressive victory in the Asia Cup for the second time in succession in Muscat, Oman, on Sunday. India secured their win against China with a score of 3-2 in the penalty shootout after the match concluded at 1-1 in regulation time.
“Kudos to the Indian junior women's hockey team for clinching the Asia Cup title. The team displayed remarkable grit and diligence. This achievement also highlights the growing enthusiasm for hockey, especially among the youth. Wishing the team all the best in their future endeavors,” stated the Prime Minister.
India's consecutive victory at this tournament was hard-fought, as the defending champions faced intense competition from China.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, striving to score the opening goal but failing to do so until just 14 seconds remained in the half. China was awarded a penalty stroke, which Jinzhuang Tan converted, giving them a narrow lead at halftime.
India equalized in the 41st minute when Sunelita Toppo and Deepika skillfully advanced the ball, setting up Kanika Siwach for a stunning field goal, bringing the score to 1-1. Neither team could find the net in the remaining time, leading to a penalty shootout.
Sakshi Rana, Ishika, and Sunelita Toppo scored during the shootout, while goalkeeper Nidhi made three outstanding saves against Lihang Wang, Jingyi Li, and Dandan Zuo to help India retain their title.
On this occasion, Hockey India announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for each player and Rs 1 lakh for each member of the support staff as recognition for their hard work and championship win.
