Hyderabad, Sep 29 (NationPress) American setter Matt West, the newly appointed captain of the Bengaluru Torpedoes, is set to lead the team in the highly anticipated fourth season of the Prime Volleyball League, kicking off in Hyderabad on October 2. Originally from Seattle, Washington, this almost 32-year-old has amassed over a decade of professional experience across nine countries.
West has garnered numerous league titles and accolades, having played in prestigious leagues like the Bundesliga, as well as in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Finland. Volleyball runs in his family, as his mother represented Peru in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and his father is also a former player.
Reflecting on his new responsibilities, West expressed, “At this point in my career, I’m less concerned with proving myself and more focused on enjoying the game and giving back. I believe India is the ideal place for that; the athletes here are exceptionally talented, and my influence as captain can be more impactful than it would be in Europe. With David Lee as our coach and my leadership on the court, our aim extends beyond just securing victories; we want to control what we can, improve daily, and build something meaningful together.”
The Torpedoes have assembled a formidable team, featuring Matt West alongside the dynamic American attacker Jalen Penrose, and a lineup of skilled Indian players, including attackers Sethu TR and Joel Benjamin J, blocker Mujeeb MC, and experienced libero Midhunkumar Balasubramaniyan.
Commenting on his teammates, West remarked, “The Indian players possess remarkable athletic prowess; their attacking and serving skills are commendable. We are currently focusing on mindset, teaching them to analyze game situations in real-time. If we achieve that balance, I truly believe this team can astound many this season.”
Having reached the finals in season 2, the Torpedoes aim to build on their solid foundation and emerge as a leading contender in the PVL. Under West’s guidance, the team prioritizes growth, discipline, and a fearless style of play. With two-time Olympic medalist David Lee consistently excelling as their coach, the team seems poised for a final push towards clinching the title.
