Ball-Tampering Scandal Shakes PSL: Lahore's Shaheen Shah Afridi Faces Tough Questions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) In a shocking development, the Pakistan Super League (2026) clash between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings was marred by a ball-tampering controversy. Lahore's captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, was visibly at a loss for words when reporters probed him about the incident during the post-match presentation.
The controversy erupted at the beginning of the last over of the Kings' innings when on-field umpire Faisal Afridi requested to inspect the ball after it had changed hands between Shaheen and Fakhar Zaman.
Following a prolonged discussion with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula, they opted to introduce a new ball, citing tampering.
During the post-match ceremony, cricket legend Ramiz Raja pressed Afridi for clarity regarding the events leading to the final over. The Lahore captain appeared unsettled and struggled to articulate a coherent response.
"I don’t have any information regarding this, and we’ll review the footage to discuss it. Five penalty runs were awarded, and there’s nothing we can do about it," Shaheen stated during the presentation.
Ramiz continued to question Afridi about the ball-tampering claims, stating, "You must consult the umpires about their decision to change the ball. When we inquired, they directed us to leave. The umpires even asked us, including the captain, to return to our positions when they were making the call."
In response, Afridi remarked, "I can speak only for myself. There was never any intention on my part to alter the ball's condition, nor did I attempt to. I recall trying to dry the ball and make it shine when the umpires stopped us from drying it under our shirts. Until we see evidence, I believe it’s a significant decision. I have not been summoned for an inquiry."
As a consequence of the incident, the Kings were awarded five penalty runs, and batters Khushdil Shah and Azam Khan had the opportunity to choose the replacement ball.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) further announced that Fakhar Zaman has been charged with a level-III offence, which carries a minimum suspension of one match and a maximum of two for a first infringement in a PSL season. Match referee Roshan Mahanama will oversee a hearing in the next two days, where Fakhar intends to contest the allegation.
