Fakhar Zaman Suspended for Ball Tampering in PSL
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lahore, March 31 (NationPress) Fakhar Zaman has been issued a two-match suspension in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) after being found guilty of a Level 3 violation under Article 2.14 of the tournament’s Code of Conduct for players and support personnel. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the ruling on Tuesday following the match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings on Sunday, March 29, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Article 2.14 pertains to infractions that involve tampering with the condition of the ball, specifically violating clause 41.3 of the HBL PSL Playing Conditions.
It specifies, “The following actions are strictly prohibited (this list is illustrative and not exhaustive): (a) intentionally throwing the ball onto the ground to roughen it; (b) using any artificial substance on the ball; (c) lifting or tampering with any of the seams; and (d) scratching the ball's surface with nails or any tool.”
For a first-time Level 3 offence, a suspension can range from one to two matches. The article further states, “Any appeal concerning this Article must be filed with the HBL PSL Technical Committee within 48 hours of receiving the written decision from the Match Referee.”
The incident transpired during the final stages of the match, resulting in on-field umpires imposing a penalty of five runs on Lahore Qalandars in favor of the opposition. The ball was later substituted before the last over of Karachi Kings’ innings.
The charge was initiated by on-field umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi, alongside TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed. Fakhar denied any wrongdoing and chose to contest the accusation during a formal hearing, as allowed by the Code of Conduct.
Match referee Roshan Mahanama oversaw the hearing, analyzing the evidence and permitting Fakhar to defend his position before making a final ruling. Present at the hearing were Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana, and team manager Farooq Anwar.
The Lahore Qalandars are scheduled to face Multan Sultans on Friday, April 3, at Gaddafi Stadium, followed by a match against Islamabad United on Thursday, April 9, at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.
