Pakistan Super League Begins Without Fans Due to Gulf Conflict: Naqvi's Apology to Supporters
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 22 (NationPress) The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to commence on March 26 as originally planned, but it will take place at only two locations and without any spectators. This measure aims to conserve resources like petrol during the ongoing Gulf conflict, as stated by Pakistan cricket chief Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday.
The determination was made after a thorough discussion with the eight franchises and consultations with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
“The Pakistan Super League will kick off as scheduled on March 26 because we must protect its integrity, and there isn't an opportunity to postpone it,” Naqvi expressed during a press briefing in Lahore.
A revised PSL timetable will be released shortly, featuring only Lahore and Karachi as venues. Other cities like Peshawar, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad have been dropped from the lineup to minimize fuel usage, given the current government regulations on fuel.
“I sincerely apologize to the fans in Peshawar who were looking forward to witnessing PSL matches for the first time, and I hope they will have more opportunities in the future,” Naqvi remarked.
The much-anticipated opening ceremony has been called off to further conserve resources. Naqvi indicated that the majority of international players are expected to arrive early on Monday to get ready for the upcoming matches.
Previous reports from Telecom Asia Sport suggested that foreign players, especially those from Australia, encountered challenges traveling through the Gulf region to reach Pakistan. Nevertheless, Naqvi now presents a contrasting viewpoint.
Naqvi has warned that he will take legal measures against foreign players who either do not appear or choose to abandon their PSL contracts for more lucrative offers from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Players like Blessing Muzarabani from Zimbabwe and Dasun Shanaka from Sri Lanka have opted for the IPL after signing with PSL teams.
Furthermore, Naqvi announced that all franchises will receive financial compensation for the loss of gate revenue due to the absence of fans.
