New Delhi, March 8 (NationPress) Punjab FC aims to achieve back-to-back wins as they take on NorthEast United FC, a team still searching for their first victory, in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the capital on Monday.

In their previous match, Punjab FC celebrated a solid 2-0 win against Bengaluru FC, while NorthEast United managed a 1-1 draw with Mumbai City FC in their last outing in Mumbai.

Discussing the team's preparations, Punjab FC's head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis stated, “We haven’t altered our approach. Our training philosophy is comprehensive, focusing on enhancing players' physical, technical, tactical, and mental skills. Moreover, we pay attention to aspects related to our opponents, which equips our players and the team for authentic match scenarios. This enhances their decision-making capabilities and fortifies their mental and emotional readiness.”

The Shers currently sit in ninth place with three points from two matches, while The Highlanders are just below them with two points from three games.

NorthEast United is facing their fourth consecutive away match. “It has been a challenging beginning for us due to extensive travel. This diminishes our recovery and training time, but we must focus on achieving the best possible outcome,” remarked head coach Juan Pedro Benali.

“Our players are prepared to give their all for the club. Everyone, including the management and staff, is striving hard to make our fans proud,” he added.

Historically, both teams have clashed four times in the ISL, securing one win each, while two matches ended in draws. Their last encounter in January 2025 concluded with a 1-1 stalemate, with Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Khaimingthang Lhungdim netting the goals.

Both coaches expressed mutual respect ahead of this pivotal match.

“Punjab is among the most intense teams in the league at the moment. They exhibit discipline, tactical acumen, and an indomitable spirit, making this encounter challenging for both sides,” commented Pedro Benali.

Regarding the opponent, Dilmperis noted, “Our primary focus is on their zeal and intensity. They employ various attacking strategies, particularly with a diligent midfield. NorthEast is an active and aggressive side filled with young talents eager to showcase their abilities in Indian football.”

As Punjab FC gears up for their inaugural home game of the season, defender Khaimingthang Lhungdim expressed, “I’m thrilled to return to our home ground, and I believe all players share the same sentiment. It's crucial for us to start strong in our first home match, and we’ll strive to secure the three points.”

Midfielder Danny Laishram, who made his debut start for NorthEast in their last match, shared, “When the coach informed me I would start, it was a proud moment for my family and me. Although I felt nervous, my teammates reassured me and encouraged me to play my game. The coach and senior players have instilled confidence in me, and I aim to keep improving and give my utmost for the team.”

As Punjab FC prepares for their first home game this season, the Shers will be keen to build on their recent victory, while NorthEast United FC strives to end their winless streak amidst a grueling series of away games.
