Mohali, July 23 (NationPress) - The second edition of the Punjab Hockey League (PHL) is set to begin on August 31, boasting a remarkable prize pool of INR 30 Lakhs, marking the highest ever for a junior-level hockey tournament in India.
The league, co-organized by Roundglass and Hockey Punjab, seeks to offer substantial match exposure to players at the grassroots level while significantly contributing to their professional and personal growth.
Eight academy teams from across the nation will compete in the league, which will unfold in two distinct phases. The inaugural edition featured six teams from Punjab engaging in a home-and-away format across two phases.
The first phase is slated to run from August 31 to September 9 at the Mohali International Hockey Stadium. The second phase, including the finals, is scheduled at the Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar from September 15-27, culminating with the finals on September 27.
Nitin Kohli, President of Hockey Punjab, expressed, “The Punjab Hockey League is a pivotal step in cultivating young hockey talent throughout the state. By offering consistent, structured competition, it not only provides essential match exposure for developing players but also promotes tactical innovation among coaches. Each team will play 14 matches, ensuring growth and consistency. The prize money will be allocated based on the final rankings of all eight teams. Each team is allowed to register a maximum of 20 players, including three from the Under-21 category and 17 from the Under-19 category.
