New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina endorsed the selection of left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad led by Rohit Sharma for the imminent ICC Champions Trophy.
Raina praised captain Rohit for including Jaiswal in the lineup even though he has yet to compete in an ODI. The 23-year-old has demonstrated remarkable performance in both Tests and T20Is for India last year and has also been recognized in the ICC Men's Test Team of the Year.
“I believe that this young man is exceptionally eager for runs. His journey to this point reflects his dedication and hard work. Kudos to the selectors, particularly Rohit Sharma, for taking him to the Champions Trophy without any ODI experience. You can see his commitment and distinct attitude; he seems well-prepared for this opportunity.
“This illustrates the essence of Indian cricket. If you dedicate yourself and possess the passion to represent your country, there will be something urging you to do so. Rohit has made a commendable decision with Yashasvi,” Raina remarked during an interview with Star Sports.
The former cricketer also shared insights on senior player Virat Kohli's approach as the marquee tournament approaches. “His mindset is unique. As I mentioned, he is a valuable teammate in the dressing room, always ready to perform. His practice routines are intense, and he leads the charge in fielding drills, encouraging everyone to give their best effort.
“I truly appreciated fielding alongside him because his enthusiasm is contagious. When he’s engaged in fielding and diving, it transforms everyone’s outlook. Virat possesses exceptional talent and embodies a fierce competitive spirit, especially in North India. We come from an environment where losing is not an option. We fight until the end, and that’s the attitude he carries,” he stated.
Kohli is set to play for Delhi in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against the Railways at Arun Jaitley Stadium starting January 30. This will mark his first appearance in the tournament since 2012.
