Cape Town, Dec 25 (NationPress) MI Cape Town's captain Rashid Khan expressed that his team is facing less pressure in the upcoming SA20 season commencing on Friday, following their triumph in the previous edition of the tournament.
The defending champions are set to return to Newlands on Friday, aiming to kick off their title defense against a restructured Durban's Super Giants (DSG). Besides Rashid, the team features Proteas stars Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, and Corbin Bosch, along with Trent Boult and new signing Nicholas Pooran.
“Last year was more challenging than this year. We started from the bottom twice in a row, and winning the trophy was a significant accomplishment for us as a team. Our success stemmed from playing collectively and taking responsibility during crucial moments,” Rashid stated in a SA20 announcement ahead of the first match.
He is optimistic about Pooran making an immediate impact. “He will inject a lot of energy into the game. We all know his potential to hit sixes. He brings excitement and enthusiasm, and I believe he’s going to enjoy his time here,” Rashid added.
On the other hand, DSG welcomes a new captain, Aiden Markram, who has previously won the tournament twice with Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) and offers a wealth of experience to the team coached by Lance Klusener.
DSG boasts a star-studded lineup, featuring England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, and former Proteas big hitter Heinrich Klaasen.
Although West Indies off-spin all-rounder Sunil Narine is unavailable at the moment, DSG has bolstered their spin attack with Proteas Test hero Simon Harmer alongside Afghanistan's mystery spinner Noor Ahmad.
“We have an excellent balance in our squad with a mix of all-rounders and world-class players like Buttler and Klaasen,” Markram commented.
“Finding our team strength and identity is crucial for us to play well and win. It’s an exciting challenge with many new faces in the competition,” Markram concluded.
