What Did Rashid Khan Say About Afghan Women Cricketers Living in Exile?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 7 (NationPress) The captain of Afghanistan's cricket team, Rashid Khan, has publicly expressed his support for the Afghan women cricketers who are currently in exile, having fled their homeland due to the Taliban regime.
He emphasized the significance of women's cricket in achieving full ICC membership for Afghanistan, ahead of their upcoming match against New Zealand at the MA Chidambaram Stadium this Sunday.
“What about the women's team? Absolutely. I believe that’s essential for our status as a full member. The ICC and the Afghanistan Cricket Board are in the best position to decide that, but we take immense pride in anyone representing Afghanistan on any platform,” he stated during the pre-match press briefing.
Rashid also acknowledged the limitations players face, highlighting that the ultimate decision regarding the women's team rests with the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
“Indeed, the final call lies with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and ICC. As players, our influence is limited; we can only concentrate on what we can impact. In this context, our support is unwavering, but significant decisions are made by those in authority,” Rashid remarked.
The Afghanistan cricket team had a commendable performance in the last T20 World Cup held in 2024, where they reached the semi-finals but were defeated by the runner-up, South Africa.
Placed in a challenging group D, they will first face New Zealand on February 8, followed by a match against South Africa in Ahmedabad on February 11. Their journey continues to Delhi for a showdown with the UAE, concluding the group stage with a game against Canada on February 19. The top two teams from their group will advance to the super 8 stage.
