New Delhi, April 22 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu praised the captain of the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill, for his outstanding performance of 90 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Monday. Rayudu described it as “remarkable batting” from the opening batsman, who struck 10 fours and three sixes during his 55-ball innings, leading the team to a total of 198/3.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan formed a solid opening partnership of 114 runs, with Sudharsan contributing 52 runs off 36 balls, paving the way for Jos Buttler to add 41 runs from just 23 balls, including eight boundaries. Meanwhile, both Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan took two wickets each, securing a convincing 39-run victory for Gujarat.
Rayudu reflected on Gill's fluent innings and his skill to adjust to a challenging pitch. “It all started with Harshit Rana bowling those two wide deliveries - Gill was struggling a bit before that. But after that, he really found his rhythm. We saw some incredible shots - pure cricketing strokes. That slog sweep against Sunil Narine was especially impressive. It wasn’t an easy shot to execute, and he managed runs all around the pitch,” said Rayudu.
“That shows batsmanship - boundaries along the ground, intelligent placement. It speaks to the quality he has and the strength of the top-order partnerships. That’s how you bat on a slow, sluggish pitch. Incredible batting by Shubman Gill,” Rayudu added on Hotstar.
Rayudu also commended Sudharsan for his traditional technique and poise at the crease this IPL season. “It gives us such joy to watch him bat. As a classical batsman, he shows how the game can still be played in a traditional style - using the pace of the ball, playing under your eyes, keeping it along the ground, and playing smart cricket. Playing smart cricket brings runs and also builds confidence,” he noted.
“When you have that kind of confidence in the dugout, it creates a ripple effect. Everyone feeds off that momentum, and your judgment and clarity of thought become top-notch. That’s what we’re seeing with him this season,” he concluded.
On Saturday, KKR will face Punjab Kings in a reverse fixture, while Gujarat is set to clash with the struggling Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 28.
