Are Maphaka and Smith the Future Stars for SA in T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Johannesburg, Jan 2 (NationPress) South Africa has announced the inclusion of promising pacer Kwena Maphaka and skilled top-order batter Jason Smith in their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Notably, batsmen Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have not made the cut.
Smith's selection is a result of his impressive recent performances, which secured him a spot over Stubbs, who was part of South Africa’s squad that finished as runners-up in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup.
Having made his T20I debut in 2024, Smith boasts a commendable strike rate of 128.30 and is currently representing MI Cape Town in the SA20. One of his remarkable recent performances was during the T20 Challenge, where he scored an unbeaten 68 off 19 balls, leading the Dolphins to the playoffs in November.
On the other hand, Rickelton struggled to make it into a squad brimming with top-order talent, including captain Aiden Markram and wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock. Besides Maphaka and Smith, players like Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, and George Linde have also received their first call-ups for the T20 World Cup.
“We are heading back to the subcontinent, where we recently faced the hosts India. The knowledge we gained from competing in those conditions will undoubtedly aid us in this tournament.
“Several players selected for the World Cup squad participated in that tour and experienced the pitches we are likely to encounter, which will greatly benefit them when we arrive in India,” stated head coach Shukri Conrad.
“Before we leave for the World Cup, we have one final T20I series against the West Indies, with that squad to be announced later this month,” he added.
Kagiso Rabada makes his return to the T20I setup after missing the recent white-ball series against India due to a rib injury. Another significant addition is pacer Anrich Nortje, who was South Africa's leading wicket-taker in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup.
South Africa is placed in Group D of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. Their campaign will kick off on February 9 against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel will serve as the specialist consultant for the team. “I would like to congratulate the players representing South Africa in their first T20 World Cup. This is an extraordinary opportunity for them in a squad that was challenging to finalize.
“We made some tough decisions, but we believe this group is the strongest and has every chance of succeeding in India and Sri Lanka. We have put together a world-class squad featuring some of the most talented and experienced players, alongside some of the best young T20 prospects,” remarked Patrick Moroney, Selector Convenor for the Proteas Men.
South Africa's squad includes: Aiden Markram (captain), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, Marco Jansen, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, and Jason Smith.
