Cairns, Aug 18 (NationPress) South Africa has included 19-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka in their ODI lineup for the upcoming three-match series against Australia commencing Tuesday in Cairns. The team is also set to give a 50-over international debut to the in-form batter Dewald Brevis.
Maphaka secured his spot in the ODI squad following an impressive performance in the recent T20I series against Australia, where he took nine wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker. The left-arm pacer, who already has two ODI appearances, might be included in the starting eleven as South Africa aims to present a formidable challenge to Australia.
Brevis is virtually guaranteed to make his ODI debut after an outstanding T20I series, highlighted by a sensational 41-ball century in Darwin, followed by a dazzling half-century in Cairns, totaling 180 runs, which made him the highest run-scorer across both teams.
South Africa's ODI captain Temba Bavuma expressed his admiration for Brevis’s recent form, stating, "It's always thrilling to witness young talent. The buzz around Brevis has been significant, and he has showcased his potential. I’m eager to see what he can contribute in the one-day format," Bavuma told reporters on Monday.
This ODI series also marks Bavuma’s return to competitive play, following his leadership of South Africa to its first ICC World Test Championship title at Lord’s in June. Bavuma, who is 34, has recovered from a hamstring injury sustained during the WTC final and confirmed he will bat at number three, following openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram.
Bavuma is among five players added to South Africa's ODI squad, which also includes veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, and top-order batsmen Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi. After the series opener in Cairns on Tuesday, both teams will head to Mackay for the next two matches scheduled for Friday and Sunday.
