Darwin, Aug 11 (NationPress) Although South Africa fell short by 17 runs in the inaugural T20I against Australia, 19-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka made a significant impression with a career-best fiery spell of 4-20. Maphaka showcased a combination of raw pace and aggression, claiming the wickets of Tim David, Mitchell Owen, Adam Zampa, and Ben Dwarshuis at Marrara Stadium on Sunday.
He began by uprooting Owen’s off stump with a lightning-fast 144kph delivery, conceding only 14 runs off the 11 balls bowled to David before dismissing him in the final over. Maphaka also had a spirited exchange with David, which his teammate Ryan Rickelton noted exemplified the pacer's competitive nature.
“He’s quite a fiery character. (But) he’s very relaxed, very quiet in the dressing room. He had a bit of a go at Tim (David) there, but he’s very competitive. He backs his ability, which is great. It’s impressive to see a young guy stand up to Australia in their own backyard,” Rickelton said as reported by ICC.
Maphaka’s impressive fielding matched his bowling prowess, as he took two sharp catches during the powerplay off Kagiso Rabada to dismiss Travis Head and Australian T20I captain Mitchell Marsh.
Maphaka's rapid ascent in senior international cricket began when he was named Player of the Tournament at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in early 2024, where he took 21 wickets in six matches with an average of 9.71.
His stellar performances led to an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians later that year, before signing with the Rajasthan Royals for the 2025 season. He made his South African debut in late 2024, bowling at speeds of up to 151kph in his first ODI against Pakistan.
Just two weeks later, Maphaka became South Africa’s youngest Test debutant at the age of 18 years and 270 days. So far, in two Tests, two ODIs, and nine T20Is, he has taken three, five, and ten wickets respectively. South Africa will be hoping Maphaka can deliver again in the upcoming second T20I scheduled for Tuesday.
