New York, Sep 3 (NationPress) World No. 1 and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka moved into the semifinals of the US Open without needing to hit a single ball after her quarterfinal rival, Marketa Vondrousova, withdrew due to a knee injury.
"I regret to inform everyone that I must withdraw from my quarterfinal match this evening because of a knee injury," stated 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
"I did my utmost to take the court today, but during warm-ups, I felt my knee again. After consulting with the tournament doctor, I decided not to risk worsening the injury. I appreciate all the support from this tournament and apologize to the fans who were eager for the match. I've had an incredible experience here in NY and look forward to returning next year," she continued.
Sabalenka shared a message on her Instagram story for her opponent: "I feel terrible for Marketa after everything she has faced. She has been playing outstanding tennis, and I know how devastating this must be for her. Take care, and I hope for your speedy recovery."
Now one step closer to defending her US Open title, Sabalenka will compete against Jessica Pegula in the semifinals, marking a rematch of last year’s final, which Sabalenka won in straight sets.
Pegula, the No. 4 seed and last year’s runner-up, secured her spot in the semifinals of a major for the second time by defeating Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-3 in just 1 hour and 26 minutes.
At 31, Pegula becomes only the second player from the Open Era to reach her first two Grand Slam semifinals after turning 30, following Flavia Pennetta, who made it to the US Open semifinals at 31 and went on to win the title two years later.
