New Delhi, June 19 (NationPress) Renowned cricketer Sachin Tendulkar expressed that it was a touching experience for him to guarantee that the Pataudi family's legacy will endure as part of the India-England cricket rivalry. This will be achieved through a prestigious medal awarded to the winning captain of the Test series, which will now be known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The decision by the ECB to rename the former Pataudi Trophy after Tendulkar and James Anderson faced some backlash. Nevertheless, Tendulkar took the initiative by contacting the ECB, BCCI, and ICC Chairman Jay Shah, advocating for the Pataudi name to remain relevant in India-England cricket. Consequently, the introduction of a new 'Pataudi Medal' to be awarded to the winning captain of each Test series was announced on Thursday.

“When I learned that the Pataudi Trophy was being retired, I was traveling, possibly in Spain. I found out that the ECB and BCCI had decided to retire it and create a new trophy. The first time I was informed about this new trophy was just last month when the ECB and BCCI agreed to name it after both of us,” Tendulkar recalled.

“This recognition reflects our contributions to our respective nations in Test cricket. I immediately contacted the Pataudi family to discuss preserving the legacy. It's crucial to acknowledge the impact on Indian cricket and how it has inspired countless generations,” he added.

“I assured them I would follow up. I reached out to Mr. Jay Shah (ICC Chairman), the BCCI, and the ECB, sharing ideas. After several discussions, we collectively agreed that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence should be awarded to the winning captain, given his leadership qualities, making it a fitting tribute,” Tendulkar stated during a virtual interaction with IANS ahead of the first Test in Leeds.

The Pataudi family's legacy is deeply rooted in the cricket history between India and England. Both Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, not only captained the Indian cricket team but also played county cricket in England, with the former being the sole cricketer to represent both nations in Tests.

“The outcome of our discussions was extremely positive. It was heartening to realize that we have preserved the legacy. It is vital to remember it as intended. I have always respected my seniors and appreciated their contributions, as they laid the foundation for our cricketing success,” said Tendulkar.

“On this foundation, numerous achievements have emerged over time. I hope that what the new generation builds will reflect our pride in the future. We must not forget our heroes; overall, it was indeed a positive outcome not only to have the trophy named after the two of us but also to ensure Mr. Pataudi's legacy thrives,” Tendulkar concluded.
