Abu Dhabi, Oct 6 (NationPress) Afghanistan’s promising right-arm fast bowler Mohammad Saleem Safi has been sidelined for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh due to a groin (adductor) overload, as announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Monday.
Safi, who has participated in one Test and T20I for Afghanistan along with two ODI matches, will be replaced by fast bowler Bilal Sami. Sami, who has made one ODI appearance, has been elevated from the reserves to join Afghanistan’s main squad for the series scheduled at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on October 8, 11, and 14.
“According to the team physio, it is unlikely he will be fit for the first ODI this Wednesday. Saleem will continue his rehabilitation at the ACB's High Performance Center until he fully recovers and can rejoin the national team,” the ACB further stated.
This ODI series is critical for Afghanistan as they seek to secure victories following their 3-0 T20I series defeat to Bangladesh in Sharjah. In the final T20I on Sunday, Afghanistan struggled to find their rhythm while batting.
They lost wickets at regular intervals, with a late boost from Darwish Rasooli (32) and Mujaid Ur Rahman helping them reach 143/9 in their 20 overs. Their bowlers were unable to perform effectively as Saif Hassan contributed an unbeaten 64 off 38 balls, steering Bangladesh to a six-wicket victory and a 3-0 series win.
This series win follows Bangladesh's narrow eight-run victory over Afghanistan in the Men's T20 Asia Cup held in the UAE. The last encounter between Bangladesh and Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series was in November 2024, where Afghanistan claimed a 2-1 victory.
