Did SAI Launch a Sports Science Workshop for Combat Sports Coaches?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has officially inaugurated a four-day Sports Sciences Workshop specifically designed for coaches in combat sports at its Sports Science Division in New Delhi.
This workshop gathered SAI coaches from prominent combat sports such as Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo, with the objective of enhancing the incorporation of sports science into everyday coaching methodologies.
The program is crafted to be interactive and practical, focusing on the application of scientific concepts to training methods, particularly highlighting strength and conditioning frameworks tailored for combat sports.
Coaches are receiving training on functional strength development, plyometrics, periodized resistance training schedules, and foundational concepts of exercise physiology pertinent to high-level performance.
“The esteemed Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Secretary (Sports) have persistently highlighted the importance of empowering coaches through sports science so that these principles are effectively utilized in routine training,” stated Dr. Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, director-cum-head of the sports science division at SAI.
“Such targeted collaborations with coaches, backed by sports scientists, will significantly enhance India’s medal prospects. Our vision is athlete-centric, coach-driven, and grounded in sports science,” he further explained.
The workshop also covered strategies for the prevention and management of common injuries in combat sports, especially shoulder injuries, utilizing evidence-based warm-up routines, strength and stability training, and scientific load management techniques.
Specialized modules on sports nutrition, recovery science, anti-doping education, and applied sports psychology further support a comprehensive strategy aimed at sustaining athlete performance and extending their careers.
The opening session featured insights from Prof. Deepak Joshi, director of the Sports Injury Centre (SIC) at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
Prof. Joshi underscored that a well-coordinated approach integrating sports science, sports medicine, and injury management could dramatically transform an athlete's career path.
“This partnership will greatly benefit India's sports framework. Athletes referred by SAI will receive prioritized treatment, ongoing clinical oversight, and a smooth transition back to training and competition,” he added.
As part of this collaboration, SAI and the Sports Injury Centre (SIC) are poised to formalize a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), following preliminary approval from the Hon’ble Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports.
Under the proposed agreement, SIC will oversee advanced sports medicine and surgical interventions, while SAI will focus on applied sports science rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols, ensuring prioritized care and a safe return to competition for Indian athletes.
