New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) At merely 17 years old, Sakshi Rana has made significant strides into the Indian squad, showcasing remarkable promise during the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25, her inaugural senior international tournament representing India, held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

She received her first cap in India’s opening match against Spain. Despite the unfortunate result of 3-4, it was a momentous day for Sakshi as she netted an impressive field goal during her debut. She also participated in matches against Spain again and Germany.

“I had long anticipated my debut day, and I was genuinely thrilled. I didn't feel nervous before the match because the senior players supported me, reminding me that no mistakes occur in your first match, thus allowing me to play freely,” Sakshi recounted about her debut.

Sakshi's goal exemplified her individual brilliance. She executed an effective press and timed her tackle impeccably to regain possession in a critical area, after which she took a touch and unleashed a backhand shot from inside the circle to score her first goal. Reflecting on that moment, Sakshi stated, “I set a goal to score during my debut, so I was very motivated. When I seized the ball, I noticed no defenders were close and decided to take the shot. The crowd erupted, and I realized I had scored a goal. I was overjoyed.”

Initially, when the squad was announced, Sakshi found herself on the standby list. However, chief coach Harendra Singh recognized her dedication and potential, subsequently including her in the lineup against Spain. “When he (Harendra Singh) informed me that I was playing, he emphasized that my selection was based on my abilities. He assured me I would have the opportunity to score and that the senior players would support me on the field. He even embraced me after I scored, which was a significant moment for me,” she expressed.

Despite her commendable performances, Sakshi acknowledges the need to enhance her speed during training. “Having faced foreign players in the Hockey India League and Pro League recently, I've realized that speed is crucial. I must be agile on the field, particularly since I play as a forward, so I will focus on that aspect now.”

Sakshi played a vital role in the Indian Junior Women’s Team that won gold at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup last year. She is now determined to carry this momentum into the upcoming Junior World Cup in Chile later this year. “My complete focus is on the Junior World Cup, and I am training diligently for it. With consistent practice and commitment, I believe I can contribute to India securing another medal,” she concluded.
