Astana, July 6 (NationPress) Two-time youth world champion Sakshi clinched India’s inaugural gold medal at the World Boxing Cup – held in Astana, Kazakhstan 2025 – with an impressive performance in the women’s 54kg final on Sunday.
The 24-year-old showcased her attacking prowess against Yosline Perez from the USA, earning a unanimous decision from the judges.
The Indian team has had a successful campaign at the World Boxing Cup, securing a total of 11 medals. Previously, India achieved six medals in the first leg in Brazil, which included one gold and one silver.
During the initial session on Sunday, four Indian boxers competed, but it was Sakshi who stood out with a remarkable display of speed and effective combination punches.
In contrast, Meenakshi fought valiantly against local favorite Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg final but narrowly lost with a 3:2 decision.
Both Jugnoo (men’s 85kg) and Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg) also earned silver medals after facing defeat in their finals. Jugnoo fell with a score of 0:5 to Bekzad Nurdauletov of Kazakhstan, and Pooja was defeated by Eseta Flint of Australia with the same score.
