New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) Aspiring goalkeeper Samiksha Saxena is setting her sights high, aiming to secure a permanent position on the Indian senior women's hockey team and achieve remarkable victories. She is relying on the wisdom of seasoned goalkeeper and former Indian captain Savita Punia, along with coach Harendra Singh, to guide her path.
Currently, Samiksha is part of the 40-member core probables group at the ongoing Senior Women’s National Coaching Camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre in Bengaluru, gearing up for the forthcoming Women’s Asia Cup 2025. At just 22 years old, she was selected for this camp following her impressive performances in the Senior Women's National Championships for Assam earlier this year. She is determined to take the next significant step in her career.
Reflecting on her experiences in the national camp, she stated, “Everything is going wonderfully. The atmosphere is great, and the coaches are supportive, allowing me to improve rapidly. This experience is unlike any I have had before.”
“I used to admire senior players on television, but now training alongside them is an incredible opportunity. I’m currently focusing on refining my movements and reflexes, and I am also working on being more decisive in my role, as I carry a substantial responsibility for my team,” she continued.
Samiksha now has the privilege of training with veteran Indian goalkeeper Savita, who has inspired her throughout her journey. Regarding her interactions with Savita, Samiksha mentioned, “I feel very comfortable approaching her. If I have any questions or uncertainties, I seek her guidance, and she addresses my mistakes during practice, teaching me every detail.”
This marks Samiksha's first experience working under the Indian women's team's head coach, Harendra Singh. “Working with him is enjoyable, and he articulates everything clearly. He ensures we understand by repeating his instructions in both English and Hindi. I am eager to further enhance my skills under his mentorship,” she expressed.
Originating from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Samiksha was raised by her grandmother, parents, two sisters, and a younger brother. Her father is a social worker, while her mother previously worked at an Anganwadi (rural child-care centre).
She began her hockey journey on local grounds at the grassroots level during her school years, initially as a field player. At 19, she was chosen for the SAI Centre in Bhopal, where her coach suggested she transition to goalkeeping. “He pointed out my height and reflexes, advising me that I would excel as a goalkeeper, so I made the switch,” Samiksha recounted.
Samiksha first represented SAI in the Junior Academy Nationals, followed by participating in the Khelo India University Games 2023–24 for ITM University, Gwalior, where she earned her degree in Physical Education.
She has played in two Senior Women National Championships — in 2024 for the Hockey Association of Bihar and this year for Assam Hockey. Her remarkable performances in Division B secured her place in the national camp.
Samiksha was at the SAI Centre in Bhopal when she learned about her selection. “Upon receiving the news, I immediately called my mother, who burst into tears. Initially, my parents prioritized my studies over hockey, but as I matured, they became my strongest supporters and are now incredibly proud of my accomplishments,” she shared.
Discussing her future aspirations, Samiksha remarked, “The journey has been long and challenging, but my ultimate dream is to represent India on an international platform. I strive to make my country proud and bring home medals for the nation,” she concluded.
