Indian MMA star and Commonwealth Heavyweight champion Sangram Singh is set to compete for the prestigious Asia Championship title at the Malaysia Strike MMA Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday, 19 July. This will mark his fourth professional MMA bout and, notably, make him the first Indian fighter to contest for the Asia Championship title on the international stage.

Sangram's challenger is Abid Ali, an experienced Pakistani MMA fighter who has secured multiple victories in international competition. The bout will be contested in the 83–89 kg weight category. The India-Pakistan sporting dimension adds considerable emotional weight to what is already a milestone contest for Indian mixed martial arts.

'Whenever India and Pakistan compete, emotions are naturally high because fans from both countries always want their side to win. There is pressure but there is also excitement. This is a huge challenge for me and I am preparing with complete focus,' Sangram said.

Sangram's path to this Asia Championship clash has been marked by a string of historic firsts. He launched his MMA career against Pakistani fighter Ali Raza Nasir at the GAMMA International Fighting Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia, winning by a dominant second-round finish. He then defeated Tunisian fighter Hakim Trabelsi in the Netherlands before the contest reached the second round.

Most recently, Sangram etched his name in the record books in Buenos Aires, Argentina, stopping French fighter Florian Caudier in just 1 minute and 45 seconds — becoming the first Indian to win an MMA fight on Argentine soil. His upcoming Kuala Lumpur outing will, once again, pit him against a Pakistani opponent on an international platform.

'I may not know much about Abid Ali's age right now, but I know he is an experienced fighter who has won many MMA bouts. Representing India at the Malaysia Strike MMA Championship for the Asian Championship title is a matter of immense pride for me,' Sangram said ahead of the bout.
