Dubai, Sep 15 (NationPress) Captain of India, Suryakumar Yadav, devoted his team's impressive seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the 2025 Men's T20 Asia Cup held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday to the armed forces back home.
This match in Dubai marked the first international cricket encounter between India and Pakistan following escalated diplomatic tensions earlier this year. The clash came in the wake of a tragic terrorist incident in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities, leading India to launch Operation Sindoor aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure across the border and in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a directive from the Union Sports Ministry, India is permitted to compete against Pakistan in "international and multilateral events," but cannot participate in "bilateral sports events in each other's country".
The prevailing tensions were evident when Suryakumar and Pakistan captain Salman Agha abstained from shaking hands during the toss. After successfully chasing down 128, Suryakumar and Shivam Dube (10 not out) exited quickly, without exchanging handshakes between players or support staff once more.
“It’s a significant occasion, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge the victims and their families of the Pahalgam terror attack. We stand in solidarity with them. I wish to dedicate this victory to all our armed forces who have displayed immense courage. I hope they continue to inspire us and that we can bring more smiles to their faces whenever we have the chance,” Suryakumar stated in an unplanned message during the post-match presentation.
Interestingly, no interview was conducted with Agha during the presentation ceremony. When asked if the preparation for this match differed from others, Suryakumar replied, “We view it as just another game. Our preparations remain consistent for all opponents.”
“What occurred a few months ago set the tone for us. I have a great admiration for spinners as they dictate the game in the middle overs,” he added.
India successfully chased down Pakistan’s score of 127/9 with 25 balls remaining, spearheaded by Suryakumar’s unbeaten 47, coinciding with his 35th birthday. “It’s a wonderful feeling and a fitting return gift for India. It’s human nature to reflect on it (his previous comment about the win being a return gift). You always want to secure a victory, and achieving that is rewarding. One personal goal I had was to stay until the end and finish the innings,” he expressed.
Kuldeep Yadav, awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding figures of 3-18, attributed his success to sticking to straightforward plans. “Just implement the plans. Assess who is batting and respond accordingly. I had my strategies and executed them well.”
“Every first ball is viewed as a potential wicket-taker; it’s essential to maintain that mindset and aim for a wicket. The batter may be settled, but it’s their first encounter with me. I still feel there’s room for improvement in my bowling. Sometimes, I think I rely too heavily on variations.”
