Ahmedabad, Nov 18 (NationPress) For 20-year-old para-athlete Saurabh Sharma, the approaching Adani Ahmedabad Marathon is more than just a competition; it embodies his journey in sports and personal development. As a visually impaired runner from Himachal Pradesh, Saurabh has showcased his talent on significant para-athletics stages, both nationally and internationally. His participation in the Ahmedabad Marathon marks a pivotal new chapter in his remarkable journey.
Born with partial blindness, Saurabh kick-started his sporting journey at the National Drishti Divyangjan Empowerment Institute in Dehradun, under the mentorship of coach Naresh Singh Nayal. Initially drawn to football and cricket, it was his coach who steered him towards running, a decision that would profoundly influence his athletic career.
“In 2021, I took part in my inaugural Para Nationals in Bengaluru and finished among the top five. The following year, I clinched my first medal in the 5000m event in Odisha. In 2024, I traveled to Switzerland for my first international competition and secured two gold medals. That experience opened my eyes to the potential of my journey,” shared the 20-year-old, who earned two gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2024 in Switzerland.
Saurabh has represented India in the 1500m and 5000m T12 events at international meets in Tunisia and India. He has also garnered medals at both editions of the Khelo India Para Games in 2023 and 2025. Presently, he trains at the SAI Centre in Gandhinagar, under the guidance of Naresh Sharma.
“The most significant obstacle for a visually impaired runner is securing a guide, and the costs can often be prohibitive,” he mentioned. “I’m lucky that I can run independently in my category. However, I’ve also guided fellow runners at the Blind National Championship in 2022, and I understand the level of trust and practice required.”
“At the SAI Centre, we benefit from excellent coaching, nutrition, and facilities, enabling us to concentrate entirely on our performance and preparation for international events,” he added.
Like many para-athletes, his journey is characterized by both perseverance and patience. “Initially, my family didn’t grasp the significance of sports. They would question, what kind of game is this? But as they witnessed my competitions and victories, they transformed into my strongest support system,” he recounted.
This November, Saurabh will join thousands of runners in celebrating fitness and national pride at the Adani Ahmedabad Marathon. Since its inception, the event has championed the #Run4OurSoldiers initiative, honoring India’s armed forces. It has evolved into one of the nation’s largest inclusive races, uniting civilians and members of the Indian Armed Forces to run in solidarity and pride for the country. “What I love most about this marathon is its inclusivity. My childhood dream was to enlist in the army, but due to my visual impairment, I couldn’t. Participating in a race that honors our soldiers is incredibly meaningful. It allows me to contribute in my unique way,” he expressed.
Regarding his future goals, Saurabh stated, “My ultimate aspiration is to represent India and win a medal at the Paralympic Games. Events like the Ahmedabad Marathon are integral to that journey. They challenge your endurance and mindset, reminding you why you began running in the first place.”
The ninth edition of the Adani Ahmedabad Marathon is slated for November 30.
