Did Sciver-Brunt Just Make History in WPL 2026?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 26 (NationPress) Batting all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt expressed her joy after becoming the first player to achieve a century in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), scoring an unbeaten 57-ball century that propelled Mumbai Indians to a remarkable total of 199/4 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on Monday.
“I’ve seen several players fall in the 90s, so I aimed to avoid that. My goal was to contribute as many runs as possible for the team. I’m genuinely pleased we could reach that total, and personally, I'm very happy,” Nat shared during a mid-innings interview with the broadcasters.
After a lengthy wait of 1059 days and 82 matches, the WPL finally saw its first century, fittingly scored by Sciver-Brunt, who also marked her inaugural T20 hundred. Coming in early, she managed the pressure well before accelerating with exquisite strokeplay and impeccable timing, dismantling the RCB bowling attack with her unbeaten century, which included 16 fours and a six.
Nat mentioned that her wife, former England fast bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt, was hoping for her to hit a century. “Katherine is likely watching nervously, so she might not be seeing it all,” she joked.
“But she wished for a tea and urged me to reach three figures, so here we are. I’m absolutely thrilled. Achieving my first T20 century is a significant milestone, and I hope it’s just the beginning,” stated Nat.
She also formed a crucial 131-run partnership with Hayley Matthews, who scored 56. “Hayley must be delighted to return to form after a long injury layoff and contribute significantly. I always enjoy batting alongside her whenever I get the opportunity,” she added.
“We’ve faced challenges losing tosses in evening games, so I’m quite pleased to have put this score on the board. However, we know our bowlers face a tough task against such a strong batting lineup. We need to be ready for that,” Nat concluded.
