Former India opener Virender Sehwag has issued a blunt assessment of Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of their high-stakes IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), warning that the side has squandered enough chances and cannot afford another defeat in the playoff race.

The Pressure on Punjab

Punjab Kings began the IPL 2026 season with back-to-back wins that signalled genuine title ambition, only to collapse into a run of six consecutive losses that has pushed their campaign to the brink. They now require at least 15 points to remain in playoff contention, making the fixture against Lucknow Super Giants a virtual knockout tie.

'Punjab Kings cannot afford to lose this game against Lucknow. There will not be a second chance. They have had enough opportunities to seal a playoff spot, but failed to take them,' Sehwag said in an interview with JioStar.

Batting and Bowling Both to Blame

Sehwag identified a twin failure across departments as the root cause of Punjab's slump. 'Their batting has let them down in crucial moments, and their bowling has lacked discipline. Sometimes the law of averages catches up when you win too many games, but Punjab have been on the wrong side of it lately,' he said.

He also pointed to Dharamshala as a venue that compounded their difficulties. 'Dharamshala did not suit them at all — the conditions were tricky, and they struggled to adapt. Maybe the conditions in Lucknow will be better for them,' Sehwag noted, expressing hope that a change of venue might reset the side's mindset.

Why LSG Remain a Threat Despite Elimination

Although Lucknow Super Giants have already been knocked out of playoff contention, Sehwag cautioned that their freedom from pressure makes them a particularly unpredictable opponent. 'Lucknow are a dangerous side. Their batting lineup is packed with match-winners, and they have nothing to lose. That freedom can make them even more unpredictable. They will play without pressure, while Punjab will carry all the weight of qualification,' he said.

Sehwag framed the encounter as a test of temperament as much as technical ability. 'It will be a test of nerves as much as skill. If Punjab want to stay alive, they need to bring their A game in all departments,' he added.

Mitchell Marsh — The Key Threat

Sehwag singled out Mitchell Marsh as the single biggest danger to Punjab's bowling attack, particularly in the powerplay overs. 'Mitchell Marsh will be a big challenge for Punjab's bowling attack. Even in the last two seasons, when Punjab made the final, their bowling was never their strongest suit,' he observed.

He elaborated on the structural weakness that Marsh could exploit: 'They have lacked a reliable wicket-taker in the middle overs, and that weakness has been exposed time and again. They will struggle against Marsh, especially in the powerplay where he is most dangerous.' Marsh has been among LSG's standout performers at the top of the order this season despite the team's overall struggles. 'His ability to pick length early and clear the boundaries with ease makes him a handful on any surface,' Sehwag added.

Can Punjab Still Qualify

Despite the bleak run of results, Sehwag retained a degree of optimism rooted in Punjab's early-season quality. 'They need to reach 15 points to stay in contention. But I hope Punjab find a way to win and qualify. They deserve it after their strong start,' he said.

He acknowledged the psychological toll of the losing streak while pointing to the squad's proven ability to fight back. 'They began the season with back-to-back wins, showing their hard work and intent. But six straight losses have hurt their morale and brought their campaign to the brink. Still, this Punjab side has strong players who have fought back before,' Sehwag concluded. The match against Lucknow Super Giants now stands as the defining moment of Punjab Kings' IPL 2026 campaign.
