Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has said the Indian selection committee appears to have reached a definitive conclusion on Rishabh Pant's place in white-ball cricket, with the wicketkeeper-batter dropped from the ODI squad for the upcoming West Indies series despite being handed the captaincy of the Rest of India (ROI) side for the Irani Cup.

The Pant Paradox: Valued in Red-Ball, Sidelined in White

Speaking to Jio Star ahead of the three-match ODI series, Chopra described Pant's situation as one of the more unusual in Indian cricket. The 26-year-old remains a key figure in Test cricket — a format where he has also recently been stripped of his vice-captaincy — yet finds himself effectively written out of the 50-over setup without having played regularly enough to be formally dropped.

'Rishabh Pant is a very strange and very unique case. While he is playing Test cricket and is a very important member of the red-ball side, he was stripped of his vice-captaincy duties there as well. But in ODI cricket, without playing, he's been bid goodbye,' Chopra said.

'At the same time, he has been made the captain of the Rest of India, which also tells you that, with respect to red-ball cricket, they are very serious about Rishabh playing a huge role in the longer format. But for white-ball cricket, as of now, I think this selection committee has made up its mind,' he added.

Pant's Thin ODI Record and What It Signals

Pant has played just one ODI in the past four years and was never a permanent fixture in India's 50-over squad. He was also left out of the T20I setup following India's triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup. His omission from the West Indies ODI squad now arrives as India formally begin their build-up toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, making the selectors' stance appear increasingly long-term rather than tactical.

This comes amid a broader reshaping of India's limited-overs leadership. Shubman Gill will captain the side against the West Indies, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both named in the 15-member squad. KL Rahul has been appointed vice-captain, replacing Shreyas Iyer, who is part of India's Asian Games campaign. Dhruv Jurel is among the wicketkeeping options in the ODI setup.

World Cup Planning and the Emerging Competition

Chopra also drew attention to the selection battles shaping up in India's ODI group as the team looks to build depth for the 2027 World Cup. He pointed to the crowded opening slot as one of the more compelling subplots of the West Indies series.

'You have to think about who you can take along as reserves for the World Cup. So, there will be a toss-up here between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who are both part of this team, and whenever they've played, they've scored a lot of runs. So, I'm looking at an opportunity opening up for one of these two,' Chopra said.

He also highlighted Auqib Nabi as a player to watch: 'Auqib Nabi has been travelling with the team for some time now but isn't getting a chance to play in the XI. If he gets his opportunity, I'll be quite excited to see him perform.'

Series Schedule: When and Where

The three-match ODI series against the West Indies gets underway in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September, with the second game in Guwahati on 30 September and the third in New Chandigarh on 3 October. The series doubles as an early audition for players eyeing a berth in India's expanding World Cup roster.
