Aakash Chopra: Rishabh Pant Must Break Free from His Reputation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener, has expressed his belief that Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper batsman and captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has become a hostage to his own reputation for executing unconventional shots. He suggests that Pant must critically evaluate his strategy, particularly in the white-ball format, as he prepares for the upcoming 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), set to kick off on March 28.
Chopra emphasized that Pant's inclination towards risky shots has hindered his performance. He advised the young player to revert to fundamental batting techniques to reclaim his spot in the Indian T20I team.
“The attention surrounding Rishabh Pant is warranted. He has become a hostage to his own reputation for playing unconventional shots and seldom takes the time to accumulate runs when necessary. Last season, despite having chances to stabilize and rebuild his form, he persisted with high-risk shots, attracting criticism,” Chopra stated on JioHotstar.
“Having been a key member of India's T20 World Cup-winning team in Barbados, he now finds himself out of the national selection conversation. The selectors transitioned from choosing a middle-order keeper to opting for an opener and a keeper who can bat at three positions. While the IPL holds significant value, representing India is the ultimate goal, and losing that place means it’s time for him to reassess his game,” he added.
Chopra also noted that Pant's distinctive perspective on the game sets him apart from others, revealing that his batting style, although effective in Test matches, did not sit well with former Indian coach Rahul Dravid.
“We sometimes overlook the unique contributions Rishabh Pant makes and his distinct interpretation of how the game unfolds. During his time in Test cricket, he had discussions with Rahul Dravid when he was Head Coach, who was not particularly pleased with Pant’s batting style. However, it’s important to acknowledge that Pant perceives the game differently from those who view it traditionally,” he remarked.
Chopra added that Pant's initiative to seek advice from former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is a positive indicator of his desire to improve.
“What reassures me is his recognition that he needs to modify aspects of his game. He must search for a strategy. Something is amiss. He is aware of his capabilities. The very fact that he has reached out to Yuvraj Singh for assistance demonstrates that he understands the necessity for guidance. This is a promising sign. With his talent and skills, it’s unfortunate that he isn’t thriving in white-ball cricket,” he pointed out.
Pant managed to score only 269 runs in the 13 matches he participated in last season, with a disappointing average of 24.45. All eyes will be on his form when LSG kicks off their campaign in IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals at their home ground, Ekana Stadium, on April 1.
