New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has expressed his disagreement with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant's choice to open the batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, following Pant's brief stint at the top order against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday.

Pant took the initiative by promoting himself to the opening position against the Delhi Capitals, but his time at the crease was abruptly ended due to an unfortunate run-out at the non-striker’s end. The dismissal occurred after a drive from Mitchell Marsh deflected off the bowler’s hand and hit the stumps.

Pietersen argues that Pant, who faced challenges with his form last season, has heightened the pressure on himself by opting to open. He suggests that Pant should refrain from forcing his way to the top and instead enjoy the role he plays in the batting order.

“Considering the strength and depth of LSG's batting lineup, is Rishabh Pant truly suited to be an opening batter? It seems he may have advanced too quickly compared to last year. Previously, he had moved down the order, and now suddenly he wants to come back to the top,” Pietersen commented on Jio Hotstar.

“He simply needs to go out and relish his cricket. There’s no need to pressure himself into batting at three; he should appreciate the luxury of that position. I believe he places immense pressure on himself by taking on the opening role,” he added.

Pant made headlines last year by becoming the most expensive player in the tournament's history when LSG acquired the wicketkeeper-batter for Rs 27 crore. However, his batting performance did not match his price tag. Although he scored a century, his overall contributions were lackluster, with the century coming when LSG was already out of playoff contention.

He accumulated only 269 runs in the 13 matches he played last season, averaging a disappointing 24.45.

Meanwhile, LSG faced a setback in their opening match as the Delhi Capitals easily chased down a target of 142 runs in just 17.1 overs. Pant's batting position will again be scrutinized when LSG takes on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match on April 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Point of View

Pietersen's criticism of Pant's batting position reflects broader concerns about performance pressure in high-stakes cricket. The discussion highlights the need for players to find balance in their roles while contributing to team dynamics.
