New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has offered a critical analysis of Rishabh Pant’s performance in T20 cricket, discussing why the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain's exceptional talent has not been consistently evident in this fast-paced format leading up to IPL 2026.

Pant is under immense pressure as both a batter and a team leader. His dynamic stroke play has positioned him as one of the most thrilling talents in global cricket; however, concerns linger regarding his T20 consistency.

In evaluating Pant’s batting style, du Plessis pointed out that the numerous options available to the left-hander present both an advantage and a hurdle.

“Rishabh Pant possesses a tremendous talent. Watching him in Test matches, you can see he has an array of shots. But when I analyze his game, it seems he has an overload of options. He believes he can send every ball for six, anywhere on the field. Yet, in T20 cricket, a method and a game plan are essential for success. Consider the great T20 players; their boundary-scoring areas and minor weaknesses are often predictable,” du Plessis explained to JioStar.

“They navigate through challenges effectively. With Pant, there’s always a sense of unpredictability. Observing him bat, it’s as if he could be dismissed at any moment due to his sometimes frantic style. His T20 strike rate, hovering around 130, is surprising for someone with such a diverse shot selection. Perhaps this is shaped by our expectations from his Test performances, where he plays boldly and aggressively. We tend to expect that same level in T20s,” he continued.

As LSG gears up with a formidable top order including Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran, du Plessis shared his thoughts on where Pant might best fit into the lineup.

“With the recent auction strategies for LSG in 2026, their top-heavy batting order—with key players like Markram, Marsh, and Pooran—indicates that there might be a spot for Pant at number three. Pooran might be the only player able to slide down the order. Given the success Marsh and Markram enjoyed last season at the top, I expect them to maintain this arrangement.

“Thus, number three could be an ideal position for Pant. The statistics suggest he performs best there, so I envision him batting at number three with Pooran moving to number four,” he stated.

Du Plessis further emphasized the need for Pant to clarify his T20 strategy, especially in the initial phases of his innings, to achieve better consistency.

“Rishabh Pant’s batting can often seem chaotic. There’s a method and a strategy swirling in his mind. He has a clear game plan for Test cricket, and he needs to develop a similar one for T20s. Determining his approach will enhance his chances of being a consistent performer, ideally aiming for a 60 to 70 percent range rather than fluctuating between one or two out of ten. To do this, he cannot premeditate each ball,” he cautioned.

“That approach is too risky. While it may lead to a few sixes and standout innings, when bowlers target the wider areas against him, he should have the versatility to hit effectively through the offside. His strategy should not be one-dimensional; he has the potential to score in all areas of the field. For me, it’s crucial how he handles his first six balls. He often appears more like a highlight reel player; I want him to transition into a high-impact player regarding his contributions,” he concluded.
