Lucknow, May 20 (NationPress) Lucknow Super Giants batsman Mitchell Marsh has expressed his support for captain Rishabh Pant, urging him to finish the season strong in the remaining two matches despite a challenging campaign that has led to their playoff exit for the second year in a row.
This season, Pant has struggled significantly, accumulating only 135 runs across 12 matches, marking his worst performance in IPL history. He has managed just one half-century, with a strike rate of 100, the lowest he has ever recorded in the tournament.
Previously, Pant had only one season, in 2016 during his IPL debut with the Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils), where he scored less than 200 runs. His lack of form has severely impacted LSG's chances of making it to the playoffs.
With just two matches remaining, Marsh believes Pant is determined to turn his performance around.
"We all know he is a fantastic player, full of skill and talent, and I am confident he will bounce back in these final matches," said Marsh. "The time for reflection can wait until after the season, and I am focused on contributing to our team's success in these last two games. The IPL is a tough tournament with narrow margins," he added during the post-match press conference.
Pant's recent performance included a mere seven runs in a six-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, which dashed their playoff ambitions.
"We have lost several close matches this season, and now we need to focus on finishing strongly," Marsh added.
Marsh also acknowledged their aggressive reputation this season, which was evident when they scored 280 runs in their opening match, igniting discussions about maintaining that intensity.
Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad's head coach Daniel Vettori praised his team's performance despite their playoff elimination, emphasizing the importance of learning to adapt to various conditions.
"We need to better understand how to play in different situations, as we have struggled in certain conditions," Vettori commented. "Today was a good reminder that while we can be aggressive in the power play, we must also bat responsibly during the middle overs, which is a significant takeaway for us," he concluded.
