New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) The BCCI's recent ruling to limit the stay of players' wives and girlfriends to a maximum of two weeks during tours exceeding a month has drawn sharp criticism from a former national selector, who labeled the decision as "shocking and laughable."
This policy was established in a review meeting on Saturday in Mumbai, which involved BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and captain Rohit Sharma.
According to the new guidelines, for series or tournaments spanning more than 45 days, family members may accompany players for up to 14 days, whereas for shorter tours, this limit shrinks to seven days. The former selector expressed disappointment, stating that rather than such a surprising decision, fans were hoping for anticipated alterations in the team lineup with the introduction of fresh talent.
"Isn't it a joke that BCCI reportedly dismissed WAGS due to Indian cricketers' failures against Australia in BGT? We expected some changes within the team, possibly new faces being injected or promoted, but all these reports surfacing in the media are truly shocking or rather laughable," remarked the former national selector during an interview with IANS.
BCCI officials are of the belief that having families present, especially during overseas assignments, can lead to distractions for players, ultimately affecting their performance. In addition, the BCCI has enforced a rule mandating that all players travel with the team at all times.
This adjustment aims to tackle concerns about certain players opting to travel separately in recent years, a practice the board considers detrimental to team unity and discipline.
