New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) - The West Indies, former champions twice over, have announced a seasoned team on Monday for the Men’s T20 World Cup, which is set to commence on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. Shai Hope will lead a significantly altered squad compared to the one that faced Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Only batters Johnson Charles, Shimron Hetmyer, and Brandon King remain from the previous series, while the pace attack sees minimal changes. Notably, the explosive Guyanese batter Quentin Sampson has been selected despite a modest tally of just 35 runs across three T20I innings.

At 25, Sampson's inclusion is attributed to his impressive performance in the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he amassed 241 runs in nine innings for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, achieving a strike rate of 151.57, making him the franchise's third-highest run-scorer.

All-rounders Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein, and Sherfane Rutherford return after their absence in the Afghanistan series, while former captains Jason Holder and Rovman Powell are back alongside Romario Shepherd. The squad will also compete in a T20I series against South Africa leading up to the World Cup.

Fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been included despite missing the Test series in India and the ODI matches against Bangladesh due to injuries. He will bolster the pace lineup, which includes Holder, Matthew Forde, and Jayden Seales, while spin duties will be managed by Hosein, Chase, and Gudakesh Motie.

The 15-man roster features 11 players from the squad that participated in the 2024 home World Cup. Left-handed opener Evin Lewis, who had a lackluster performance against Afghanistan, has been dropped, along with fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, who is sidelined due to injury.

West Indies find themselves in Group C, competing against Scotland, England, Nepal, and Italy. They will kick off their campaign against Scotland on February 7 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, followed by matches against England (February 11), Nepal (February 15), and Italy (February 19).

West Indies squad: Shai Hope (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Jayden Seales, and Romario Shepherd

Point of View

I believe this squad reflects both experience and the potential for growth. While Shai Hope's leadership may be questioned, the inclusion of seasoned players alongside new talents offers a balanced approach. This tournament could be a turning point for West Indies cricket.
