Defending champion Ben Shelton advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open in Montreal on 10 August, defeating teenage sensation Joao Fonseca of Brazil 6-3, 7-6(3) in a hard-fought fourth-round clash lasting one hour and 48 minutes. The fifth-seeded American, ranked No. 10 in the ATP Rankings, secured his 30th victory of the season and kept his unbeaten run in Montreal intact.

How the Match Unfolded

Shelton was made to work from the outset, falling behind early in both sets before finding the resolve to turn each one around. In the opening set, the two players exchanged breaks before Shelton seized the decisive moment at 4-3, converting a sharp forehand winner to earn another break and serve out the set.

Fonseca — who had already eliminated former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas and ninth seed Casper Ruud in earlier rounds — came out firing in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. His momentum was briefly disrupted when he appeared to hurt his right ankle chasing down an overhead during a break-point opportunity. Shelton capitalised immediately, recovering the break to level at 3-3.

Fonseca battled back and saved a break point at 5-5, forcing a tie-break. Shelton then produced his best tennis of the match, dominating the tie-break 7-3 to close out the contest.

Shelton's Aggressive Blueprint

The American's attacking game was the defining factor. Shelton won 78 per cent of his first-serve points and claimed 14 of 18 points at the net, underlining a consistent strategy of moving forward and compressing his opponent's time.

'It was tough out there today and I competed well. It wasn't easy conditions to play in. I struggled to find my footing on a lot of balls, as did he. A lot of it just comes down to grit in a match like this. So to come through with a win against a really high-quality player like Joao is huge for me,' Shelton said.

He added: 'For me, it's about playing aggressive tennis. I look to try to get to the net and be aggressive and take the time away. I thought I did a great job of that in the tie-break today, came up with clutch volleys, and ultimately that's what made me win tonight.'

Context and Head-to-Head

The victory extended Shelton's Lexus ATP Head2Head lead over Fonseca to 2-0, having also beaten the Brazilian in Munich earlier this season. Fonseca, who was chasing his first Masters 1000 quarter-final appearance, exits having made a considerable impression against top-ranked opposition.

Shelton has already claimed titles in Dallas, Munich, and Stuttgart this season and remains the only Top-10 player left in the Montreal draw.

Quarter-Final Ahead: Shelton vs Mensik

Shelton will next face Czech 13th seed Jakub Mensik, who advanced after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 29 minutes. The 20-year-old Mensik recovered from a precarious position in the second set — just three points from dropping it at 4-5 — before winning three consecutive games to seal his place in the last eight.

Notably, the quarter-final will pit two former Masters 1000 champions against each other, making it one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. With Shelton's title defence gathering pace, the semi-final spot is very much on the line.
